Plenty of Snow, Plenty of Trees, Not Much Common Sense

We had a relatively busy weekend here in Grayling, especially for March. Last weeks storm brought a bunch of snow that became heavy, wet, and slippery with the addition of a bit of freezing rain. Groomers have been out (except for those DNR boys on the Lovells trail…). The snow seems to shift and stay soft, though, not really packing down. We’ve had a hard time keeping our lot clear and down to hardpacked dirt.

We had another accident this weekend, our second major wreck of the winter. This time, the renter lent the machine out to a young guy. This first-time snowmobiler, and his girlfriend, slid into a tree at maybe 30 mph. The machine wrapped itself around the tree and the two worthless idiots went flying through the handlebars and into the next tree.

Damage: 1 totaled snowmobile, broken helmet, 1-2 broken bones, and hopefully a broken sense of indestructibility on the part of that young …. person.

I’ll copy here, again, the basics of our contract:

1. If the machine breaks down, it’s our problem.
2. If you run into a tree, it’s your problem.
3. We don’t have collision insurance.

On a positive note, this was only the third crash we’ve had in five years of rentals. All were due to user error. BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!
